How PMU Laser Removal Works
Laser treatment uses short pulses of light energy to break unwanted pigment into tiny particles, which are then gradually cleared by the body.
Because permanent makeup can contain several different pigments, successful removal may require different laser wavelengths and techniques as the colour changes throughout treatment.
There is no one-size-fits-all approach. Your treatment is planned according to the pigment in your skin and how it responds.
Understanding PMU Pigment & Colour Changes
Permanent makeup can change colour as it ages. Organic pigments often appear cooler or greyer over time as warmer components fade more quickly, while inorganic, mineral-based pigments may leave warmer red, orange or pink tones behind.
Some inorganic pigments can also darken when first treated with laser, a predictable reaction known as colour flipping. Once flipped, the darker pigment can then be targeted during subsequent treatments.

Your Consultation
Before treatment, you’ll attend a consultation and patch test. During this appointment, we will:
- Review your medical history
- Assess your permanent makeup
- Discuss your treatment goals
- Explain how your pigments are likely to respond
- Carry out a laser patch test
- Answer any questions you may have
This ensures your treatment plan is completely personalised and allows us to determine the safest and most effective laser settings before your first appointment. Consultations are carried out at least seven days before treatment.

Most clients describe the sensation as similar to a quick elastic band snap against the skin. Treatments are very fast and we use advanced cooling technology to make them as comfortable as possible. Eyeliner removal also includes local anaesthetic before inserting the protective eye shields.
This is known as colour flipping and is often an expected stage of the removal process. Warm pigments are converted into a darker tone so they can be targeted during future laser sessions. Although it may look unusual initially, it is usually a positive sign that treatment is progressing.
Most eyebrow and eyeliner removals require between one and three treatments, although older permanent makeup or multiple previous procedures may require additional sessions. Your consultation will provide a more personalised estimate.
Yes. Many clients choose laser removal to create a clean canvas before having fresh permanent makeup applied. Sarah can advise when your skin has healed sufficiently and whether further fading would be beneficial before new treatment.
Yes. Occasionally the laser can temporarily make eyebrow hairs feel slightly dry or brittle, but this is temporary and the hair naturally regrows without permanent damage.
Not always. Certain medications, medical conditions, recent sun exposure and skin type can affect your suitability for laser treatment. This is why every client undergoes a consultation and patch test before treatment begins.
